The Osaka Station Hotel: A Landmark on the Site of the First Osaka Station
Located in the vibrant Umeda district of Osaka, the Osaka Station Hotel has opened its doors within a newly constructed skyscraper directly connected to Osaka Station. For our client—a railway company that played a pivotal role in shaping western Japan—the hotel’s location on the site of the original Osaka Station is profoundly significant. To honor the history, culture, and value of this land while passing it on to future generations, the brand concept was defined as "THE OSAKA TIME."
In response to this vision, we developed a design philosophy called "A Journey Through Time and Space," drawing on memories of Osaka Station and railway history. This theme was introduced to the design elements throughout the hotel.
In the public areas, which form the first impression of the hotel, the introduction to the "Journey Through Time and Space" begins with a nod to the red bricks that were a signature feature of the original Osaka Station. At the ground-floor entrance, we used custom-made red-brick-colored glass as a symbolic feature. As guests ascend to the lobby on the 29th floor, they are greeted by a massive display of layered bricks. The brickwork transitions from older to newer styles, evoking the passage of time while exploring innovative brick expressions.
As guests proceed through the hotel, additional "memory designs" welcome them. The reception lobby reimagines the ticket boxes of the old station, while the Station Square emulates a bustling waiting area. The lobby lounge with gabled roof, recalls the original platform of Osaka Station. An all-day dining inspired by the luxury dining cars of yesteryear, and a secret bar offers panoramic views of modern trains traveling through Osaka Station below. Each space deepens the hotel’s unique "Journey Through Time and Space" by celebrating the memories of railways and stations.
The hotel also features art installations made from salvaged railway parts that were once destined for disposal. These artistic elements are seamlessly integrated into the space, creating a compelling narrative that intersects past, present, and future.
Since opening, the hotel has received many heartfelt requests to display personal railway memorabilia from guests. We are honored to have created a place where people feel inspired to share their memories and hope this venue will continue to weave the stories of many generations to come.
