o-i STUDIO by KOKUYO Co., Ltd. (Japan)

Mitsubishi Pencil is a long-established writing instruments manufacturer founded in 1887.

In Oimachi, Tokyo, where its headquarters is located, a studio was established to create a point of contact between local residents, creators, and employees. Visitors can encounter and experience “expression” through stationery, art, and books.

The studio was designed as a space that can be enjoyed by everyone, from children to adults. The concept of the space was to create an atmosphere similar to that of a school arts and crafts room, where people can enjoy writing and drawing intuitively while immersing themselves in their creative work.

Actual pencils are used for display tables and bookshelves. The key elements are the approximately 9300 pencil boards, the large paper-like arc of the ceiling, and the shiny brown colour used for the surface finish of the Mitsubishi pencils. The large paper-like arc-shaped ceilings will generate creative activities. The space is dotted with numerous fixtures made from materials produced in the pencil manufacturing process, creating a softness and a unique sense of nostalgia. The soft scent of wood wafts through the studio, evoking nostalgic memories of the creative experience.

The pencil board has slits carved into it at every pitch. We utilized this distinctive material for display stands, countertop waist wall designs, and bookshelf shelves. The slits can be used to insert paper for product descriptions or small introductory comments. The slits also serve as a book stand. By leveraging Mitsubishi Pencil's unique materials for multiple uses, we achieved a simple yet diverse design without introducing unnecessary motifs.

The boards can be upcycled when the furniture is dismantled. We are also considering the possibility of re-creating them as pencils to tell the story of how the memory of this place was passed down through the generations.
