TOKYUPLAZA HARAJUKU“HARAKADO” by NOMURA Co., Ltd (Japan)

"A place to create and experience new Harajuku culture that stimulates the sensibilities of a diverse range of people"

We had to ask ourselves, do we really need any more new consumer facilities in today’s materialistic world? We don’t need copies of the same commercial facilities that we have already had. What we need is a community that continues to grow in harmony with the city.

TOKYU PLAZA HARAJUKU “HARAKADO” was born in Harajuku, Tokyo as a new area commercial facility. It is a place where friends can gather and co-create, where people can enjoy good food and conversation, where people can relax and release stress. This place has all the margins needed in an urban environment. A "creative facility" where work and play intersect, connecting people with the city.

Harajuku has a history of developing as a town where creators gather. By opening the facility to various creators and having them involved in its operation, we aimed to pursue sustainability as a commercial facility. Places that are consumed will become obsolete, but ones where people can interact, grow, and undergo continuous renewal across multiple generations will become accepted as new urban options. Therefore, the spatial design here is designed to be flexible and adaptable to change in order to maximize the residents' ideas, and to help residents connect organically with each other as if they were neighbours, helping to expand their creativity.
