THE NIIGATA by NOMURA Co.,Ltd (Japan)

Completed in the summer of 2024 in Ginza, Tokyo, The Niigata redefines regional identity in an urban context. Commissioned by Niigata Prefecture and the Niigata Industrial Creation Organization, this innovative facility blends tradition with modernity, creating a multi-functional space that introduces Niigata’s culture, cuisine, and craftsmanship to one of Japan’s most prestigious districts. As a retail space, cultural hub, and event venue, it enhances Niigata’s presence in domestic and international markets, fostering tourism and economic growth.

Originality and Creativity

The design concept, “newness and nostalgia,” bridges the past and present, evoking a sense of tradition for Japanese visitors while offering international guests an authentic Japanese cultural experience. Interactive elements such as sake tastings, freshly made onigiri rice balls, and art displays seamlessly blend Niigata’s timeless traditions with innovative expressions. The space celebrates the themes of “rice, sake, and snow,” while incorporating “art” inspired by the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, transforming the hub into a sensory journey through Niigata’s heritage.

The event space features a soil art installation by Koichi Kurita, an artist with deep ties to Niigata through his work with the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and the SatoyamaMuseum of Contemporary Art.

His floor design incorporates soils from Niigata’s fields, celebrating the region’s natural diversity and offering a tactile connection to its landscape. This unique fusion of artistic vision and regional storytelling exemplifies the originality and creativity of the project.

Appearance

The facility’s design harmonizes Niigata’s natural and cultural elements with Ginza’s urban sophistication. Locally sourced wood defines the interiors, while furniture crafted from “Snow Beach” wood and “Kameda-shima” fabric highlights the prefecture’s craftsmanship. Abstract visual motifs inspired by Niigata’s localities are woven into the branding, creating a cohesive narrative that enhances the facility’s aesthetic.

The integration of visual, tactile, and artistic elements also includes the work of Naoto Sunohara, whose art captures the harshness of nature and the gentle essence of Niigata’s local culture, offering visitors an artistic lens to explore the region.

Constructability

The facility was designed with practical construction in mind. Upcycled materials, such as byproducts from Niigata’s nail clipper and chopstick industries, were repurposed into functional furniture elements like sake-tasting tables. These thoughtful choices ensure the space meets both functional and aesthetic requirements.

Commercial Value

Situated in Ginza, the hub strategically promotes Niigata’s cultural and culinary offerings to a national and international audience. It serves as a vital platform for showcasing regional products, hosting cultural events, and deepening connections between Niigata and its visitors. By fostering tourism and expanding Niigata’s market influence, the hub significantly enhances its commercial value.

Sustainability

Sustainability is central to the design, with locally sourced and upcycled materials minimizing environmental impact. This artistically driven, eco-conscious approach underscores Niigata’s commitment to environmental stewardship, innovation, and craftsmanship.

The Niigata exemplifies how thoughtful design can celebrate regional identity while addressing modern needs. By seamlessly integrating originality, aesthetics, functionality, commercial relevance, and sustainability, it sets a benchmark for how regional culture can thrive in a global context through design excellence.
