BLUE NOTE PLACE by A.N.D., NOMURA Co., Ltd (Japan)
A plan for renovating a restaurant that features live music. After a thorough structural assessment, a spacious central atrium was created. The stage was positioned facing the main street, resulting in a three-dimensional space configuration that allows a 360-degree view from all corners. Opening the windows seamlessly blurs the interior and exterior, creating a new breezy ambianceconnecting the city and the restaurant through music.
Environmental consciousness was prioritized. The original brick building was used to the fullest extent, and all the new wood used was repurposed from scaffolding boards. Custom lighting fixtures, such as pendant lights, were also crafted by reusing discarded musical instrument parts such as strings, guitar jack shields, and pegs. Additional musical elements were sprinkled throughout the interior, further solidifying the connection to music.
To prevent sound from leaking, restaurants with live music are often isolated underground in spaces without natural light. In this case, extensive collaboration with residents and authorities resulted in a strategy to manage sound not as a disruptive element but as a positive contributor to the neighbourhood's character—the result: a new form of restaurant that goes beyond interior design and positively impacts the community itself.
