“AR-BSTRAC-T” by Yokobori Architect & Associates (Japan)
"AR-BSTRAC-T", the design concept of this residence is a fusion of the words Art and Abstract. We believe that art is the most expressive medium for reflecting a resident's personality, heart, and soul. When designing, from the layout to the materials, every detail is designed like an abstract painting, blending the space with art. This residence comes to life when filled with carefully selected art pieces. There is a Japanese phrase ⼀期⼀会(Ichigo-Ichie), meaning "a once-in-a-lifetime encounter". It represents the idea of cherishing unique moments that will never be repeated, just like an encounter with art. In this context, art is not limited to paintings or sculptures but encompasses special and unique items, such as a stone found on a walk or a child’s heartfelt drawing. We define art as something tied to a "once-in-a-lifetime" meeting, something deeply personal.
The house features multiple spaces designed to display art in various forms. Unlike shelves or niches, these spaces are created by shifting walls or adding depths on the walls. This designing method incorporates the Japanese concepts and aesthetics of "Ma" (the concept of space) and "Yohaku" (the beauty of emptiness), both of which are in fact deeply connected to Buddhist spirituality.
In our design philosophy, the connection with nature is very important. Just as nature has no dead ends, this home features a circular flow floor plan. The material selection—earth, wood, and stone—also establishes a tactile connection to nature. The floors are made of wood and stone, while the ceilings and walls are made of plastered earth. These handcrafted materials, finished over time, add a sense of temporal depth to the space.

The color scheme is single tone of sand beige, with subtle light and shadow adding characteristics to the walls. Copper, a material historically appreciated in classic Japanese architecture for its beautiful aging process, is used as an accent in door frames and bases. With a modern twist, we can enhance the timeless beauty of this material. The large wall-mounted storage unit in the living room is finished with Bvlga Stone, while Mark Alexander’s straw wallpaper adorns the doors, elevating the aesthetic with a natural, handmade touch.
In the living room, we’ve designed an original rug with Solstys, handwoven by Tibetan artisans. Solstys uses the rug as a canvas to express the authenticity and wildness of nature. On the rug, the stools from CASA BUKU (our original furniture brand) symbolize the phases of the moon and the sun.
"AR-BSTRAC-T" is more than just a home; it is a living embodiment of the union between art, nature, and timeless design principles. Every detail is carefully designed to create a space where art is not merely displayed, but is woven into the very fabric of daily life. Through its unique design, this residence honours both personal moments and the beauty of the world around us, offering a truly transformative living experience where art, nature, and culture exist in perfect harmony.
